Welcome to The Curious Canadian, and thank you for being curious.
My name is Martin J. Clemens. I’m a Canadian writer with a longstanding interest in the strange, unexplained, overlooked, and occasionally absurd. Over the years I’ve written about everything from historical mysteries and paranormal claims to archaeology, science, consciousness, philosophy, and those questions best left to the dark corners of whimsical coffee shops.

My work has appeared on The Daily Grail and a number of other websites devoted to the strange and unexplained, as well as in print. The Curious Canadian originally became a place to gather some of that scattered writing onto a single platform. Many of the older essays here were first published elsewhere, sometimes in slightly different forms.
After several years away from writing, I’ve returned to the site and begun adding new work as well. Consequently, what you’ll find here is a mixture of old and new: an archive of where my curiosity has taken me over the years, and an ongoing record of wherever it happens to take me next.
There is a common thread running through most of it. I’m fascinated by extraordinary claims, but fascination and belief are not the same thing. Nor, for that matter, do I think skepticism and dismissal are the same thing. I’m less interested in telling people what they should believe than I am in asking why we believe the things we do, what evidence exists for them, and what happens when we follow that evidence wherever it leads.
That means some subjects treated seriously here may seem ridiculous, while others that are commonly accepted may receive considerably less reverence. Sometimes the interesting part of a mystery turns out not to be whether the extraordinary explanation is true, but why the mystery exists in the first place.
I don’t claim to have all the answers. That would rather defeat the purpose of being curious.
So have a look around. Read, comment, disagree, investigate further, or simply enjoy the oddities.
There is, after all, an awful lot to be curious about.
